Iran is located in a dry region of the world with average annual rainfall about
250 mm. Abiotic stresses mainly drought, high temperature and salinity are the major
constraints of crop production in this area. To study these problems, the department
has been established as one of the most well-equipped physiology and proteomics
laboratories in Iran.
The main challenge of plant physiologists in ABRII is to identify the physiological
mechanisms of plant tolerance to abiotic stresses and use them to improve crop tolerance.
Improvement of the agronomic characteristics of wild species for cultivation under
stressed conditions is also another objective of this department.
Another key challenge is to identify the genes responsible for abiotic stress tolerance
and to use the genes efficiently to accelerate plant breeding. We use proteomics
approach, backed up by genomics and bioinformatics, for gene discovery and molecular
breeding in relation to drought- and salt-tolerance.
This department is currently involved in studying:
- Forage crops (grasses and legumes species) for fodder production in
dry and salt-affected areas of Iran
- Adaptation of wheat for cultivation in saline soils
- Salicornia potentials for producing edible oil
- Metabolic pathways in plants
- Using proteomics approach
