The Histoy of ABRII starts with one Department in the Seed and Plant Improvement
Institute in Karaj. In 1998 the Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture decided to develop
this Department and build up the Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of
Iran (ABRII).
The old building was renovated and extended. In 1999 the first laboratory was prepared
and the Department of Genomics under the direction of Dr. B. Ghareyazie was founded.
One year later the Director General could dedicate the Department of Plant Physiology,
Biochemistry and Proteomics. Only a few months later the Department of Tissue Culture
and Gene Transformation and in 2001 the Department of Microorganisms and Biosafety
were established.
Up to 2005 ABRII became the most important Biotechnology Research Institute in Iran.
Many national and international scientists came to teach or to learn in workshops
and congresses organized by ABRII. More than 100 students did their thesis in ABRII.
Many Governmental and Agricultural organizations visited ABRII and were very impressed
by the excellent research facilities.
Today the number of scientists has reached to more than 100 persons. ABRII has become
member of many Agricultural Networks and has a long list of international collaborations.
To increase the possibilities the Regional Institutes, the Agricultural Biotechnology
Research Institute of Central Region in Isfahan and the Agricultural Biotechnology
Research Institute of West and North-West Region in Tabriz were founded in 2004.
The Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of North Region in Rasht will
be inaugurated in beginning of 2006.
In October 2005 Dr. Khayyam Nekouei, Director General of the Agricultural Biotechnology
Research Institute of Central Region was introduced as the 2nd Director General
of ABRII by the Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture. Dr. Khayyam Nekouei will continue
to employ high qualified national and international scientists to develop the research
in ABRII.
After only 5 years the institute has reached to its full capacity. Therefor the
main building in Karaj will be replaced by a new building with place for more than
around 400 national and international researchers until 2009.
