The Head of the Gene Bank Department of Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) and the President Designate of the EUCARPIA at ABRII

Dr. Andreas Börner the Head of the Gene Bank Department of Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) Visited ABRII on 5th September, 2018.

Introducing different departments of ABRII, Dr. Babak Nakhoda, Head of the Plant Molecular Physiology Department (ABRII), presented the recent achievements and projects of the Institute. He also explained some of the projects which are in the pipeline for future research.

Dr. Andreas Börner is the head of the Gene bank department which is the home of the Federal ex situ Gene Bank for Agricultural and Horticultural Crop Species. It is one of the world’s leading institutions of its kind. Its mandate covers the conservation of its germplasm collection and the supply of seed for both research and breeding purposes. The gene bank is to be expanded to form a digital biological resource center through the development of a digital database which, with the supported of bioinformatics will capture both genetic and trait-based data.

His research group is responsible for the management of the Gatersleben gene bank collection, which entails the long-term storage, multiplication and distribution of the germplasm. Its major research foci concern seed longevity, genetic integrity and genetic diversity, and it also carries out an extensive program of germplasm evaluation and genetic characterization. The experimental work belongs to the IPK research theme 1 "Concepts for the valorization of plant genetic resources" and is done in close co-operation with other IPK research groups with expertise in molecular and biochemical techniques, as well as with numerous non-IPK institutions.
