Dr. Reza Mohammadi is a plant breeder. He graduated from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in 2012 and he did his PhD thesis at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) entitled Genetic components and QTL analysis of salinity tolerance at reproductive stage in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Now he is working on cool-season grasses breeding and grass-endophyte interaction, and also plant tissue culture and micro-propagation. Cool-season grasses have an important role in agriculture. The forage grasses provide pasture and hay for the livestock industry, help prevent soil erosion on land, which is unsuited for row crops, provide wildlife habitat and contribute to land reclamation. Turf grasses have long been a major landscape surface in the urban environment such as lawns, athletic fields, and parks. Cool-season grasses could tolerate, more or less, environmental stresses such as drought, salinity, and cold. Objectives of our research include: collecting and evaluating potentially useful grass germplasm, isolating and evaluating endophytes associated with cool-season grasses; selection, breeding, and developing of turf and forage cultivars for variable environmental conditions.
